UCC Preschool Academy

Preschool Academy

UCC Preschool Academy is a Christ-Centered Licensed Preschool that engages children in active learning through six developmental domains:

Social

COGNITIVE

EMOTIONAL

PHYSICAL

LANGUAGE

SPIRITUAL

We know that children learn differently and need a variety of learning encounters.  Therefore, we  use the Creative Curriculum which utilizes learning through a balance of child led and teacher directed activities to take advantage of both children’s natural curiosity and preparation for kindergarten.  Hands-on-learning activities and projects encourage thorough understanding by tying learning to memorable events.  A creative preschool program meets the developmental needs of the children and encourages growth not just in academics, but in social and emotional areas as well.  Teachers guide children in exploring their interests as they investigate the world around them.  Our degreed teachers are able to integrate and incorporate numerous types of learning experiences so ALL learners can succeed.

MISSION STATEMENT

To “Teach children to love God, love people, and bring the two together.”

UCC Preschool Academy is designed to meet the needs of the UCC church body and local community by sharing the mission to partner with families to help build a Spiritual foundation for children that will enable them to become fully devoted followers of Christ, as well as life- long learners.

Our purpose is to provide children the opportunity not only to attend preschool but to attend one that teaches Christian values.  Our goal at UCC Preschool Academy is to minister to the whole child, and our individual objectives are derived from the “Kansas Early Learning” standards as well as child development milestones.

We are a Christ-centered licensed preschool with an Academic focus that engages children in active learning through six developmental domains:  Cognitive, Social/Emotional, Language, Fine motor, Gross motor, and Spiritual development.  It is through these experiences that we believe children gain vital developmental opportunities where they can continue to grow and learn to their full potential.

Spiritually: recognizing that God’s Word is the foundation for all of life, as the academy seeks to teach children about Jesus Christ’s love for them.

Academically:  UCC Preschool Academy strives for a balance of academic excellence in every facet of our program.  We believe children need a balanced education that will prepare them for kindergarten academically as well as socially.  That being said, our teachers seek to challenge children to their full potential while being aware that some children need more time to practice skills.  Emotionally:  Dedicated teachers, who are interested in the needs of their students’ help the child grow with a sense of security and self-worth.  Socially: How students relate to each other as well as their interaction with adults is an important part of their growth.  Physically:  UCC Preschool Academy believes that physical activity is an important part of their overall growth.  Strengthening children’s core muscles and limbs helps to develop the appropriate posture and fine motor skills needed for children to learn to write properly.  Additionally, we strive to provide children with the tools they need not only to succeed in school, but in life.

Philosophy/Curriculum

Our Philosophy is to guide and assist children to grow and develop to their fullest potential. We know that children all learn differently, so therefore strive to reach each child through multiple learning modes.

Great care must be taken in delegating this responsibility, and in light of this it is of the utmost importance that UCC Preschool Academy informs all school participants of our religious view, that the Bible is God’s inherent Word and all instruction will support this belief.  The school’s mission statement to “Teach children to love God, love people, and bring the two together” is the basis upon which the preschool program is designed.

We offer a Christ Centered Curriculum called “Orange”, as well as the “Creative Curriculum” for preschool.  The “Orange” Curriculum is a web-based curriculum that uses engaging activities to introduce pre-school children (birth to 5) to God. The lessons include what is called “first look” which gives children a first impression of their heavenly father and the wonder of His love for each one of them.

The Creative Curriculum utilizes learning through a balance of child led and teacher directed activities to take advantage of both children’s natural curiosity and preparation for kindergarten.  Hands-on-activities and projects encourage thorough understanding by tying learning to memorable events. A creative preschool program meets the developmental needs of the children and encourages growth not just in academics, but in social and emotional areas as well. Teachers guide children in exploring their interests as they investigate the world around them.   For children who are more advanced, or just need extra time to practice, there is an option for “homework”. This “homework” is additional worksheets that the teacher can prepare and send home with your child to help reinforce and practice what they have already learned in class, or to extend their learning.  Coordination of “homework” should be planned and discussed with your child’s teacher. Never, do we want to overwhelm children with extra work for which they are not ready.

“Zoo phonics” is our multisensory language arts program that uses a kinesthetic, multi-modal approach to learning all aspects of language arts, including vocabulary development & articulation based on phonics and phonemic awareness. Zoo phonics uses animals drawn in the shape of the letters for ease in memory. A related body movement is given for each letter. This concrete approach cements the sounds to the shapes of the letters.  Lowercase letters and their sounds are taught first, capital letters and letter names are taught later.
